PLANTING DATES
Cool Season Grasses
August 15 – October 1
(brome, fescue)
December 1 – April 15
Plants which demonstrate major growth during the cool seasons of the year (spring and fall) are cool season grasses. Optimum growth temperature is 65-75 degrees. They are not as efficient as warm season plants in the utilization of water, so therefore they require a greater amount of rainfall in order to grow and produce seeds. Examples of these grasses include the Bromegrasses, the Fescues and the Bluegrasses.
Warm Season Grasses
December 1 – May 15
(native mix)
March 15 – May 15 (best dates)
Warm Season Grasses are those whose primary growth occurs during the warm months. Many of these are native to the United States, with their adaptability to poorer growing sites and seasonal hardiness making them the grasses of choice for many varied users of grasses.
Examples of these grasses include Big Bluestem, Sideoats Grama, Little Bluestem, Switchgrass, Western Wheatgrass, and Osage Indiangrass with several varieties of each available.
All grass seed is available through the Morris County Conservation District by calling 620.767.5111 Ext. 101
